Gout and coronary artery disease: Epidemiologic clues

Krishnan E - This review of recent cohort studies and post-hoc analyses of randomized controlled trials concludes that in populations with relatively high cardiovascular risk, hyperuricemia is associated independently with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Studying the relationship between gout and coronary artery disease (CAD) is a challenge because of the complex interplay and clustering of risk factors. Further complications are expected because many of the medications that treat cardiovascular risk factors have uric acid reduction properties. Further, in statistical models, adjusting for the use of NSAIDs is a challenge, because this drug class affects on blood pressure and other cardiovascular parameters.
