Osteoarthritis and Cartilage , 09/05/08
Hochberg MC et al. - An analysis of Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT) patients suggested the effect of chondroitin sulfate on joint swelling occurred more often in patients with milder pain and lower Kellgren–Lawrence Grade at entry.
Methods- GAIT- a 24-wk, double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial comparing glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and the two in combination in treating knee pain in pts (n=1583) with knee OA
- Pts were randomized into placebo, glucosamine 500 mg x3/d, chondroitin sulfate 400 mg x3/d, combination in the same dosages or celecoxib 200 mg/d
- Pts on celecoxib had improvement in knee pain vs placebo
- No improvement in knee pain was seen among pts randomized to the dietary supplements
- Pts with moderate-to-severe pain receiving combination experienced some improvement
- Pts taking chondroitin sulfate had improvement in knee joint swelling
