Jamin C et al. – B lymphocytes play an important role in the pathogenesis of several autoimmune diseases, however the mechanisms of autoimmunity is still unclear. Besides autoantibody production by pathogenic B cells, Breg cells play a role due to abnormal immunoregulation.
B cell depletion with anti-CD20 mAb seems to be effective in reducing the pathologic changes in RA
However, disease activity increases again with B cell repopulation
Repeated treatment, resulting in long-term B cell depletion may prolong effectiveness
Instead of B cell depletion, stimulation and control of Breg cell activity could be beneficial to the down-regulation of abnormal autoimmune responses
This would lead to an innovative alternative approach to treatment of autoimmune disorders
