Mechcatie E - Rheumatologists treating juvenile idiopathic arthritis now have a third approved drug to consider using with the Food and Drug Administration's approval in April of abatacept. A selective T-cell costimulation modulator, abatacept has been approved for treating moderately to severely active polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in patients aged 6 years and older. It can be used as monotherapy or with methotrexate, but should not be used with tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antagonists and is not recommended for use with other biologic treatments of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), such as anakinra, according to the label.
