Cefle K et al. – Parental consanguinity has no effect on RA severity, and the frequency of consanguinity is not increased among the parents of RA patients. Methods
Aim was to 1) evaluate the frequency of consanguinity among the parents of RA pts and 2) influence of parental consanguinity on clinical and laboratory parameters
265 RA pts were divided into 2 groups: presence or absence of consanguinity between their parents
Frequency of parental consanguinity was compared with the general population
The two groups were compared with respect to family history, age of onset, diagnosis, and duration, and several other clinical and laboratory parameters
Results
8% of pts had parents who were consanguineous
This observation was not more frequent vs general population (14%)
The mean age of disease onset and the mean age at which RA was diagnosed were lower in pts with parental consanguinity
The other clinical and laboratory parameters were also not different between the two groups
