Kisacik B et al. - The results presented in this study suggest that assessment of mean platelet volume (MPV) may provide additional information about inflammation in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA)

Methods
  • Aim was to investigate the correlation between MPV and the clinical disease activity indices of RA and AS
  • The study consisted of 32 active RA pts and 30 active AS pts along with 26 osteoarthritis (OA) pts and 29 age-matched healthy subjects as control groups for RA and AS, respectively

Results
  • MPV was lower in both AS pts and RA pts with active disease vs. controls
  • After treatment, MPV values significantly increased in AS and RA
  • However, MPV values remained somewhat lower in RA pts than OA pts
  • A negative correlation between MPV values and BASDAI scores in AS pts after two mos of treatment was noted
