Biochemical markers of bone turnover and their association with bone marrow lesions
Hunter DJ et al. – Serum Type I Collagen N-telopeptide (NTx) was weakly associated with bone marrow lesions (BML) presence in both study samples as reported in this trial. Since this relationship was not strong their use as markers for the presence of BMLs is not recommended. Methods- Aim was to determine if markers of bone resorption and formation could serve as markers for the presence of BMLs
- Knee MR images were scored for BMLs
- In addition, a subset of persons with BMLs had a quantitative volume measure of their BML
- Bone biomarkers assayed included NTx/ Cr, Bone Specific Alkaline Phosphatase (BSAP), and Osteocalcin (OST)
Results- 151 subjects with knee OA were assessed from the first study
- The mean (SD) age was 67 (9) years and 60% were male
- 69% had maximum BML score >0, 48% had maximum BML score >1
- LnNTx demonstrated an association with the odds of a bone marrow lesion being present increased 1.4 fold per SD increase in the Ln NTx
- 55% of participants from another study had a maximum BML score >0
- The relationship between NTx and maximum score of BML>0 revealed an association with OR=1.7 after adjusting for age, sex and BMI
