Ho–Pham LT et al. – These data show that vitamin D insufficiency is common even in tropical region, and that women had a greater risk of vitamin D insufficiency than men. These data suggest that an elevation in PTH cannot be used as a marker for vitamin D deficiency.
L. T. Ho-Pham (05/11/2010) comments:
I should note that the study was conducted in south Vietnam, where sunny climate is the norm. However, in north Vietnam, where the climate is more variable and less tropical than the south, particularly during winter, I would expect that the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency is even higher than what we have found in the south.
