Hughes R – Rarely a day goes by without news of the recession, its impact on the economy and society, and speculation on when the financial downturn will end. The implications of the recession on nursing and residential care are, as one would expect, marginal to mainstream news stories, but are far reaching for people using services, providers and commissioners of care. The recession could not have come at a worse time for social care. Eligibility of social care services and the Fair Access to Care System is recognized to be at breaking point and funding options are in need of urgent reform–as set out in government's Green paper.
