PET/CT for the staging and follow-up of patients with malignancies

Poeppel TD et al. – Review discusses the methodological issues in positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) and the main oncological indications of ¹⁸F-labelled fluoro-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG)-PET/CT.

PET and CT complement each other's strengths in integrated PET/CT
The standard whole-body imaging simplifies tumour staging and speeds up decision processes to determine appropriate therapeutic strategies
PET/CT is of high value as the primary staging and restaging modality in many tumour entities
PET/CT may also be useful for malignant melanoma, gynaecologic tumours, iodine-negative thyroid carcinoma, GIST, malignant bone tumours, testicular cancer, sarcomas, etc.
New PET-tracers in clinical routine will continually increase the number of PET/CT indications:
- ¹⁸F-choline for imaging of prostate cancer
- ⁶⁸Ga-labelled somatostatin analogues for imaging of differentiated neuroendocrine tumours
