Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms using a dedicated portable ultrasound system: Early results
European Journal of Echocardiography, 06/19/09
Flu WJ et al. – A new portable ultrasound scanner (Aortascan BVI 9600) developed for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) detection automatically detects the aortic diameter with 90% sensitivity without the need for a trained operator; thus, it can be used for screening AAA outside the hospital.
Methods- Study of diagnostic accuracy of a Aortascan BVI 9600 for automatic AAA detection
- Assessment of 150 pts with presumed aneurysmatic peripheral atherosclerotic disease
- Initial scan with conventional ultrasound (US) as reference technique
- Infra-renal abdominal aorta diameter ≥30 mm defined as an AAA
- Aorta then scanned by Aortascan BVI 9600
- AAAs detected with conventional US in 78 (52%) pts vs 74 (49%) AAAs detected with Aortascan BVI 9600
- Aortascan BVI 9600 showed sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value of 90, 94, 95, and 89%, respectively, in AAA detection
