Acute and Chronic Effects of Smoking on Inflammation Markers in Exhaled Breath Condensate in Current Smokers
Respiration, 10/15/09
Koczulla AR et al. – EBC can be used to detect the acute and chronic effects of smoking. The increased conductivity of EBC after smoking suggests acute inflammatory effects. The reduced pH in chronic smokers shows cigarette–induced inflammation.

| In this manuscript, we present a non invasive method to detect inflammation caused by cigarette smoke in the absence of changes in the lung function. We focus not only on chronic effects but also on the acute effect of smoking a single cigarette. We believe that our investigations can be of interest for chest physicians, for people who work in the field of occupational medicine and everyone who deals with smoking cessation. Best regards Andreas Rembert Koczulla |
