Wang CK et al. – Since both BAJ hyperplasia and enhanced pSTAT3 accumulation are known risk factors associated with increased lung adenocarcinoma development, these findings suggest that tt–DDE may pose risk in lung carcinogenesis.

Exclusive Author Commentary

As a co-author, I am particularly proud of this article by Prof. P. Lin (correspoding author) and Dr. CK Wang (first author). Although there is strong epidemiological indication that cooking-oil-fumes (COF) are associated with the high incidences of lung adenocarcinoma in non-smoking Chinese women in Taiwan and China, no laboratory "validation" on this important "observation" was ever made with well designed animal studies. Furthermore, COF is a complex mixture. The key chemical involved and its toxicological actions were virtuely unknown. This study by Prof. Lin and co-workers provided, for the first time, a much needed "handle" that both research scientists and physicians can rely on in understanding this COF-related pulmonary disease in vivo. Too many "basic research" are far divorced from clinical implications and have little public health impact. The present study, by joining efforts of both Ph.D.s and M.D.s, "translates" well mechanistic findings to clinical implications. I am proud to be involved.
