Hussain SF et al. – The prevalence of SDB symptoms in Pakistani employed adults was comparable to Western populations. However, male gender and smoking were not significant risk factors for SDB symptoms.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Syed Fayyaz Hussain, 10/11/09

Ethnic differences have been observed in SDB risk factors (e.g. craniofacial anatomy). This may result in higher prevalence of SDB symptoms (snoring, witnessed apnea, unrefershing sleep and daytime sleepiness) in Asian adults compared to western population. This is the first epidemiological study from Pakisatn to evaluate SDB symptoms in employed adults (n=2497). One in three adults had self-reported snoring and one in four had combination of SDB symptoms. As seen in western population, significant risk factors were age and obesity. Other risk factors included self-reported nasal blockage (OR 1.9) and family history of snoring in parents or siblings (OR 2.9). In contrast to western population, male gender, smoking and alcohol use were not significant risk factors in Pakistani adults. This study addresses the gap in literature on SDB symptoms in South Asian employed adults. It lays the foundation to study SDB risk factors in greater detail, and to assess the impact of SDB on health of Asian adults.
