Morris A et al. – The authors investigated the relationship of Pneumocystis colonization, sputum matrix metalloprotease levels, and airway obstruction in a cohort of HIV–infected outpatients. Pneumocystis–colonized subjects had worse airway obstruction and higher sputum matrix metalloprotease–12 levels, suggesting that Pneumocystis colonization may be important in HIV–associated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
