Meoli DF et al. – The findings illustrate EC heterogeneity in a single tissue and indicate a novel role for CaMKII in mediating EC migration. Because PMVEC have been shown to have impressive proliferative potential, thrombin/fibronectin stimulated migration of these cells to a site of injured endothelium is a potential mechanism by which thrombin contributes to the development of vascular lesions in PAH.

It's well known that fibronectin is rich in vessels that are injured with pulmonary hypertension. Our data support an important role for thrombin in directing cells to areas of vascular injury where they could abnormally proliferate and contribute to disease progression. We think this data supports early clinical trials of anti-thrombin drugs in pulmonary hypertension patients.
