Inspiratory muscle dysfunction in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnoea
European Respiratory Journal , 08/07/09
Chien MY et al. – A significantly lower functional performance was shown for both inspiratory muscles and knee extensors in OSA group. However, higher fatigability exhibited only in the inspiratory muscles of patients with severe OSA.
Y-T. Wu, 08/13/09
| This is the first investigation to assess both inspiratory muscles and peripheral muscle performance in severe OSA patients in comparison with the controls. A significantly lower functional performance for both inspiratory muscles and knee extensors was noted. Higher fatigability only exhibited in the inspiratory muscles may indicate muscular adaptation to the chronically increased use beyond the systemic effects on skeletal muscles. |
