Secondhand Smoke in Pennsylvania Casinos: A Study of Nonsmokers' Exposure, Dose, and Risk
American Journal of Public Health, 06/23/09
Repace JL - SHS-induced heart disease and lung cancer will cause an estimated 6 Pennsylvania casino workers’ deaths annually per 10000 at risk, 5-fold the death rate from Pennsylvania mining disasters. Casinos should not be exempt from smoke-free workplace laws.
James L. Repace, 06/23/09
| A recent NIOSH health hazard evaluation [May 2009] of 124 Las Vegas casino dealers employed at at Bally’s, Paris, & Caesars concluded that 24% had symptoms suggestive of work-related asthma. Moreover, NIOSH found that dealers absorbed and metabolized a potent tobacco-specific carcinogen, NNK. NIOSH also recommended that casinos ban smoking. This reinforces my study of Pennsylvania Casinos and strengthens its conclusions. This demonstrates that -- contrary to the self-serving statements of Big Casino and Big Tobacco -- and in agreement with the 2006 Surgeon General's Report, ventilation cannot control tobacco smoke to safe levels. |
