A Randomized Study of Lung Cancer Screening With Spiral CT (The Dante Trial): Three-Year Results
American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 06/12/09
Infante M et al. - A small stage-shift in favor of the screening arm was observed, while resection rates, advanced case rates and disease-specific mortality were similar. Lung cancer screening by spiral CT should not be advertised or proposed outside research programs.
Maurizio Infante, 06/22/09
| The DANTE trial was the first randomized trial on early lung cancer detection with spiral CT to be launched. Mid-term follow-up data from the DANTE trial are not a proof that lung cancer screening with spiral CT is ineffective, as focused effect size measures (i.e. mortality rates and trelated confidence intervals) could not be provided at this stage. However, these data should constitute a warning that, if any, the mortality benefit might be smaller than expected, and therefore support current public health policy. |
