| This is a human study describing: 1. Engraftment of exogenous parenchymal cells in the lung allograft 2. The phenotype of engrafting cells 3. The existence of a similar population of cells in the peripheral blood 4. Expansion of this cellular population in patients with lung allografts compared to healthy control subjects Our first observation extends the existing literature by carefully using single cell specific methods, confocal microscopy and STR-PCR to confirm engraftment. Observations 2-4 are novel in humans, but translate existing animal data. Cells of epithelial lineage have not previously been found in peripheral blood in patients with non-malignant lung disease or in healthy individuals with no history of pregnancy. This cellular population is expanded 7-fold in patients with lung allografts. |
