Abdelnour T et al. - Standardization of HRT, in combination with a CVP <10 mm Hg, significantly increases the utilization of hearts and lungs for transplantation, without negatively impacting other organ systems.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Tina Abdelnour, 05/13/09

While this article speaks to some strategies to preserve and maximize donor organ function after brain-death, equally important is the care provided by the critical care team prior to and during brain-death declaration.  Maintaining hemodynamic stability and normal fluid balance in patients with no hope for recovery, not only preserves the opportunity for donation to occur, but directly impacts how many recipients might benefit.  The partnership between the donor hospital, the Organ Procurement Organization, and the transplant center leads to the most lives saved.
