Recurrent Catamenial Hemopneumothorax in a Young Woman
The Female Patient, 05/18/09
Avery DM et al. - Endometriosis is a common gynecologic problem causing pelvic pain, abnormal uterine bleeding, dysmenorrhea, and dyspareunia. Endometriosis consists of functioning endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterus which causes peritoneal irritation and pelvic adhesions. Endometrial tissue has been detected in a number of non-gynecologic organs including the intestine, appendix, lymph nodes, lungs, brain, and previous abdominal incisions. Thoracic endometriosis is very rare and occurs exclusively in women of reproductive age with peak incidence in the patient’s twenties and thirties. Treatment of thoracic endometriosis is associated with a high rate of recurrence if conservative treatment alone is utilized.
