Referential Failures and Affective Reactivity of Language in Schizophrenia and Unipolar Depression
Schizophrenia Bulletin, 09/29/09
Rubino IA et al. – The findings indicate that schizophrenia and depression both are associated with high levels of referential failures but that affective reactivity of speech is present only in schizophrenia and not in depression.
I. Alex Rubino, 10/03/09
| When faced with the task of remembering bad memories of the past, only schizophrenia patients showed more referential failures compared to the task of remembering good memories. This is called affective reactivity of speech. Interestingly, only one variant of referential failure showed this increase in the unpleasant condition, i.e., the Missing Information Reference (this is scored when the discourse lacks a reference, and the listener cannot understand about whom or what the speaker is dealing, because the necessary information has not been given). The Missing Information Reference seems to be a significant marker of schizophrenic pathology. |
