Verrotti A et al. – Valproate (VPA) monotherapy in epileptic post-pubertal male pts causes a significant increase of bone turnover.
Methods- Study of changes on calcium metabolism and bone turnover in post-pubertal male pts with newly diagnosed idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) before (baseline evaluation) and 12 mo after VPA monotherapy (second evaluation)
- Subjects: 20 post-pubertal male pts with IGE, age 16.5–22.1 yrs, and 20 post-pubertal sex- and age-matched healthy controls
- Determination of physical activity, calcium and vitamin D intake
- Measurement of biochemical parameters of bone metabolism and bone turnover
- At baseline evaluation, no significant differences between parameters for pts vs controls
- At second evaluation, pts showed both markers of bone formation and resorption significantly higher than baseline values
