Holland R et al. – Results indicated that residents demonstrated significantly enhanced knowledge and attitudes about patient safety and quality improvement and provided consistently positive faculty and rotation evaluations. In addition, residents generated 20 quality improvement project proposals with a 50% rate of hospital–wide implementation, leading to meaningful changes in the systems that affect patient care.

Robert Holland, 12/16/09

This study demonstrates that resident physicians, when provided with institutional support and mentoring, can effectively apply their knowledge of systems processes, embrace innovative ideas and technological interventions, solicit buy-in from key stakeholders, and lead interdisciplinary teams to generate patient safety and quality of care improvements that are ultimately implemented system-wide. Residents and faculty feel pride in making changes that are institutionally important, easing processes for providers, and making medical experiences more satisfying for patients. Most importantly, by creating future physician champions with the skills and commitment to lead systems change, we are making a significant contribution to the future quality of health care.
