Biofilms in ocular infection
Acta Ophthalmologica, 08/09/2012
Shanks RM – Microbial biofilms are surface attached communities of microbes that are recalcitrant to antibiotic therapy and associated with a wide number of human diseases including, but not limited to as cystic fibrosis, dental caries, otitis media, osteomyelitis, and chronic wounds. There is an increasing body of evidence supporting the potential role of microbial biofilms in ocular infections. The model that biofilms contribute to ocular infections is an exciting new arena of study.
