The FDA Reviews Safety of Stimulant Medication for ADHD
American Journal of Nursing, 10/01/09
Aschenbrenner DS – Research suggests that the use of stimulant drugs to treat ADHD is associated with a risk of sudden death in children. The FDA hasn't requested changes to stimulant drug labeling at this time but will continue to monitor studies on the subject. The FDA is urging health care providers to follow the current prescribing recommendations for stimulant drugs, including assessing for a history of cardiovascular disease and obtaining further tests if a risk or the presence of heart disease is suspected.
