O'Brien KK et al. – The ability to prevent disease with vaccines did not exist until Edward Jenner inoculated a youngster with cowpox in 1796. Ongoing vaccine development and vaccination recommendations have enabled people to live healthier lives. Currently, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which reviews and updates vaccination standards, recommends immunization for U.S. adults and children against 17 infectious diseases.
