Pharmacological therapy for patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm
Expert Review of Cardiovascular Therapy , 08/18/09
Assar AN et al. – A review of pharmacologic therapy for pts with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) reports that control of cardiovascular risk factors, particularly smoking cessation, may result in a reduced growth of the AAA and improve overall pt care.
Methods- Review of pharmacologic therapy in AAA
- AAA: common and life-threatening disease characterized by progressive dilatation and rupture; mortality rate of up to 90%
- Surgical repair recommended for large aneurysms
- Watchful waiting as management for small aneurysms
- Recent AAA screening programs reduce aneurysm-related mortality, but aneurysm detection leads to psychological problems and reduced quality of life
- Small human studies show growth-limiting (doxycycline, roxithromycin, statins) for AAA
- Large randomized trials with long follow-ups must investigate safe and effective medical therapies
