Clinical trial: lansoprazole 15 or 30 mg once daily vs. placebo for treatment of frequent nighttime heartburn in self-treating subjects

Peura DA et al. – Both lansoprazole 15 and 30 mg were highly effective and well tolerated in reducing symptoms in subjects with frequent nighttime heartburn. The benefit of therapy on 24–h heartburn and nighttime heartburn on day 1 of treatment was also evident. Lansoprazole 15 mg is a suitable choice for management of frequent nighttime heartburn.

Heartburn is a frequently-occurring symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Until now, there has been no assessment of the efficacy of lansoprazole in subjects who are likely to seek an over-the-counter preparation because of frequent nighttime heartburn. In this study “nighttime” was defined as the subject’s usual sleeping interval of approximately 8 hours from the time they lay down to the time they arose, regardless of time of day –allowing shift-workers to be included in the subject population. The results of the study show that lansoprazole 15 mg and 30 mg once daily for 14 days are both highly effective for the treatment of frequent nighttime heartburn. Many patients responded within 24 hours, although lansoprazole may take 1 to 4 days to achieve its full effect. In some people it may be unnecessary to use the higher dose of lansoprazole for the treatment of frequent heartburn.
