With the number of U.S. cases of novel H1N1 influenza now approaching 41,000, including 263 people who have died, federal officials on Friday sought to reassure Americans that a preventive vaccine is on the way. Media reports of problems in production, specifically lower–than–usual yields of antigen, prompted a media briefing during which HHS, FDA, and CDC staff described many of the technical aspects of influenza vaccine production and discussed possible solutions to the challenges being encountered.
