Jesse Roth, MD, of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, North Shore–Long Island Jewish Health System, recently postulated that the tuberculosis pandemic that plagued Europe during the 19th century may have, in part, intensified the metabolic syndrome and inflammatory processes factoring into today's obesity epidemic. His provocative hypothesis was recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
