| We forecasted the overall budget impact of generic entry of topiramate on G4 European countries using real-life data on patients with epilepsy in Canada. Our projections indicate that system-wide health costs generated by users of topiramate would rise from 3.5% to 24.4% in all four countries one year after generic entry. Therefore, the savings from lower generic drug costs (-6% to -14%) are expected to be more than compensated by the combination of higher non-topiramate health care costs following generic substitution (14% to 18%), and of market-size variations (-4% to +14%). Health care payers in each country, i.e. government, insurers, and individuals, would assume comparable shares of this additional cost burden. |
