Methods- Review of levodopa for PD treatment
- Predominant motor features of PD caused by degeneration of dopaminergic neurons
- Reversible in part or whole by dopamine replacement or augmentation strategies
- Most experience with use of levodopa; most potent oral dopaminergic treatment for PD
- Long-term use of levodopa may induce motor fluctuations and dyskinesias
- Combination with a catechol-O-methyl transferase inhibitor may be enhance levodopa efficacy and duration
- Primary goals of therapy remain maintaining good motor function and quality of life
- Treatment tailored to individual pt needs is paramount
