A case of near-drowning: a case for routine cerebral monitoring
Acta Pediatrica, 10/23/09
Ponnusamy V et al. – Limited availability of electroencephalogram and cerebral function monitoring in paediatric intensive care may inadvertently delay diagnosis and appropriate treatments and so adversely affect outcomes. The authors propose that round–the–clock cerebral function and/or EEG monitoring should be available in all centres that provide paediatric intensive care.
Dr Vennila Ponnusamy, 10/24/09
| In addition to the most pertinent point this article raises about the potential for clinicians to be oblivious to brain function in very ill patients, our report also contains novel but somewhat perturbing data on current availability of out-of-hours cerebral function/ EEG monitoring in UK paediatric intensive care units. We believe these data are important because they highlight the current hiatus of monitoring of paediatric intensive care patients from the neurological aspect, and could potentially stimulate improved care for acutely brain-injured children. |
