Rheumatic Disease Clinics of North America, 08/12/09
Buskila D – Fibromyalgia (FM) is most common in midlife, but may be seen at any age. Diffuse musculoskeletal pains in children and adolescents are common. This article reviews the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, etiology, management, and outcome of pediatric FM.
- Studies have reported that as in adult pts, associated nonmusculoskeletal symptoms were common in pediatric FM, including fatigue, poor sleep, anxiety, stress, headaches, and paresthesias
- Several factors have been suggested to predispose the development of FM in children, including psychologic factors, sleep disturbance, sexual abuse, familial, and genetic factors
- A multidisciplinary approach to treatment should include:
- Nonpharmacologic treatment/education
- Aerobic exercise training
- Complementary and alternative medicine
- Cognitive behavioral therapy
- Pharmacologic treatment
- No systematic studies assessing the efficacy of drugs in pediatric FM are available
- Controlled, well–designed studies are needed to assess the prevalence, outcome, and efficacy of drugs in pediatric FM
