Maisels MJ – The key elements in preventing kernicterus are risk assessment and appropriate follow–up for the newborn infant and these are presented in a recently developed algorithm. Implementation of this approach might contribute to the prevention of severe hyperbilirubinemia and bilirubin encephalopathy.
