Chemoradiation for patients with advanced oral cavity cancer
The Laryngoscope, 10/27/09
Stenson KM et al. – The data support the use of primary CRT as a viable treatment option for patients with advanced OCC. Survival is high, and overall function for the majority of patients is satisfactory. Patients with T4 oral tongue cancer may be spared total glossectomy. The incidence of ORN may be considered acceptable, in light of the benefits of enduring life and function.

| Our experience has shown that organ-preservation techniques can be applied to patients with oral cavity cancer, as it has been to other head and neck sites.Traditionally, patients with T4 oral tongue cancer undergo total glossectomy. I believe the most powerful part of our report allows us to understand (for our patients) the potential for something dramatically different - that many patients with newly diagnosed T4 oral tongue cancer may be spared this most ablative of operations. |
