Melancon JK et al. – Medicare coverage for SPKT succeeded in increasing access for patients with Medicare, but did not affect the substantial racial disparities in access to this procedure.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Joseph Keith Melancon, 11/02/09

African American diabetics are not being offered simultaneous kidney/pancreas transplants at the same rate as non-minority patients. This is especially troubling because these patients are less likely to receive kidney alone transplants, and therefore die while awaiting transplantation. Type of insurance coverage does not seem to be the cause of this disparity.
