Assessment of addiction in chronic pain patients
Scandinavian Journal of Pain, 08/28/09
Hojsted J – The assessment of addiction liability in chronic pain patients is based on several direct and indirect measures. A thorough medical history including pain history, previous and present use of analgesics, hypnotics or anxiolytics, history of substance or alcohol abuse (patient and family) should be conducted. Several screening instruments have been developed which may be a useful supplement the observation of the behaviour of the pain patient during the pain treatment sessions. Other methods include urine toxicology and surveillance of not–sanctioned opioid use via national prescription registers. If the chronic pain patient receiving opioids has an addiction problem the patient needs special attention and care in order to handle both the addiction problem and the pain problem.
