Naqvi F et al. - Falls result from a myriad of factors that complicate their evaluation and management. Falls in the elderly result in medical morbidity and are costly to the health care system. Identification of patients who are at risk for falls and a multifactorial assessment of predisposing factors allow health care teams to formulate plans that will prevent falls in the acute care setting. The evidence supports a comprehensive review of the fall incident, followed by a post-fall evaluation. Prevention of falls in the high-risk geriatric population through the use of evidence-based recommendations can save lives, prevent costly hospitalizations, and reduce morbidity and mortality.
