Fracture Risk Reduction: How to Use FRAX in Your Practice
The Female Patient, 02/17/09
Nelson AL - The implementation of the FRAX model within the NOF guidelines gives clinicians the ability to make more specific therapeutic recommendations based on a comprehensive assessment of each individual’s fracture risk. The calculations should be performed routinely and, because the questions involved are straightforward, they can be obtained from a standard health questionnaire or asked by a medical assistant. Another benefit of calculating these fracture risk estimates is that women will be reminded they are vulnerable to fracture, even if their risks are low. This may reinforce their commitment to calcium and vitamin D intake and to weight-bearing exercises, and will make them more open to discussions about other strategies to reduce fall and fracture risks.
