Zoledronic acid effective in fracture prevention after 1 year of treatment

As reported in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, the anti-fracture effect of zoledronic acid is apparent as early as 12 months after treatment and persists for at least 3 years. The study involved 9355 women with osteoporosis who were followed for 3 y. Compared with the placebo group, the ORs for fractures in the women 1, 2, and 3 years after treatment with zoledronic acid were 0.74, 0.53, and 0.61, respectively.

Exercise + weight loss program effective in treating hip OA

As published in Physical Therapy, a combined 8-month exercise plus weight loss program in overweight or obese patients with hip OA (n=35) resulted in a 32.6% self-reported improvement in physical functioning, as well as pain and walking. This is the first report to demonstrate a benefit in patients with hip OA, which is consistent with the reported benefit of exercise plus weight loss in patients with knee OA.

An alternative regimen for diabetic foot infections

As published in Infection, iv moxifloxacin (400 mg qd) is as effective as iv piperacillin/tazobactam (4.0/0.5 g tid) followed by oral amoxicillin/clavulanate (875/125 mg bid x 7-21 d) in the treatment of diabetic foot infections (69.9%-76.4% vs. 69.1%-78.8%, respectively).
