Zoledronic acid effective in fracture prevention after 1 year of treatment

As reported in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, the anti-fracture effect of zoledronic acid is apparent as early as 12 months after treatment and persists for at least 3 years. The study involved 9355 women with osteoporosis who were followed for 3 y. Compared with the placebo group, the ORs for fractures in the women 1, 2, and 3 years after treatment with zoledronic acid were 0.74, 0.53, and 0.61, respectively.

Exercise + weight loss program effective in treating hip OA

As published in Physical Therapy, a combined 8-month exercise plus weight loss program in overweight or obese patients with hip OA (n=35) resulted in a 32.6% self-reported improvement in physical functioning, as well as pain and walking. This is the first report to demonstrate a benefit in patients with hip OA, which is consistent with the reported benefit of exercise plus weight loss in patients with knee OA.
