Dietary acid load is associated with lower bone mineral density in men with low intake of dietary calcium
Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, 07/30/2013Mangano KM et al.
The objectives of the study were to: 1) evaluate the cross–sectional relation between dietary acid load (DAL) and bone mineral density (BMD); 2) determine whether calcium intake modifies this association. Men (n = 1218) and women (n = 907) ≥60y were included from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005–2008. This study highlights the importance of calcium intakes in counteracting the adverse effect of DAL on bone health. Further research should determine the relation between DAL and change in BMD with very low calcium intake.
