Total femoral endoprosthetic replacement following excision of bone tumours
The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (British Volume), 11/02/09
Sewell MD et al. – Total femoral endoprosthetic replacement can provide good functional outcome without compromising patient survival, and in selected cases provides an effective alternative to amputation.
Mr M. D. Sewell, 11/02/09
| This paper highlights the poor prognosis of patients who have large high grade bone sarcomas particularly when metastases are present at presentation. Historically surgical management has required amputation but this paper demonstrates radical excision with endoprosthetic limb salvage can allow such patients to have optimal function for the remainder of their life without compromise of survival. |
