Lyu SR et al. – The findings of this study support the beneficial effect of some surgical procedure that would remove the pathologic medial plica for the treatment of medial compartment OA knee.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Shaw-Ruey Lyu, 10/21/09

The so called "medial abrasion phenomenon" between fibrotic medial plica and the medial femoral condyle has long been noticed in our daily practice and confirmed by this study. Eliminating this phenomenon by "arthroscopic medial release", according to our previous study (Shaw-Ruey Lyu, Arthroscopic medial release for medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee, J Bone Joint Surg Br, September, 2008, Vol 90-B, issue 9, Pages 1186-1192), could effectively relieve pain of OA knee in most patients, reversal of the natural cause of degeneration could even be observed in some patients. The findings of this study give us more clues about the role of this structure in the pathogenesis of OA knee.
