Massoud EIE – The results support use of the absorbable reinforcement device for tension regulation at the suture line.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Elsayed Ibraheem Elsayed Massoud, 10/09/09

The influence of the mechanical environment on the healing process of the repaired patellar tendon has occupied to great extent the current knowledge. The better healing requires initial mechanical protection followed by timely mechanical loading of the repaired tendon. Second surgical procedure for removal of a reinforcement device at the loading time, seems unpractical option. However, use of a reinforcement device that is automatically able to terminates its function and exposes the healing area for biomechanical loading at the correct time; therefore seems to be an attractive option. The present technique based on conversion of normally generated distraction force of a muscle that might disturb the healing, into useful force. We have used the bases of this technique successfully in repair of other subcutaneous tendons. Elsayed Massoud, MD
