Almqvist KF et al. – The results of this short–term pilot study show that the alginate–based scaffold containing human mature allogenic chondrocytes is feasible and safe for the treatment of symptomatic cartilage defects of the knee. The described technique provides clinical and histologic outcomes that are equal but not superior to those of other cartilage repair techniques.

K. Fredrik Almqvist, 11/22/09

Dear all, The remark of your physician editor concerning this article are wrigth - no clinical difference was seen between the used technique oa allogenic chondrocytes compared with other techniques at 2-years follow-up. We are not expecting any significant difference at this short-term period, although the advantage of this technique is that it is a one-stage procedure, resulting in less morbidity, less time-demanding forr trhe patient and financial advantages for the common society compared with a two-stage procedure.
