Long-term follow-up on 33 TPR ankle joint replacements in 26 patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Jensen NC et al. – Study reports the long-term survival of this first generation type of total ankle replacement (TAR) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients; adding some optimism to the development of TAR.

Methods

Aim was to present the results of long term follow up of 23 yrs in a cohort of RA pts who underwent TAR
33 TAR were performed in 26 RA pts from 1980 to 1993
Endpoints: removal of the prostheses and radiolucency
All pts were followed to prosthesis failure or until death of the pts or until Jan 2008

Results

2 pts with 3 prostheses were still alive with their prosthesis in place
18 pts with 23 prostheses had died with their prosthesis in place
2 pts had their ipsilateral leg amputated 12 and 14 yrs after operation of unrelated causes
5 prostheses in 4 pts had been removed
10 yrs prosthesis survival was 85%, when removal is the endpoint
